Chairman Becerra: Our Fight For Immigrant Rights and Keeping Hardworking Families Together Is Not Over

Statement

Date: June 23, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (CA-34) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's 4-4 decision in the U.S. v. Texas case.

"As the son of immigrants, I know first-hand how our country serves as a beacon of hope, opportunity, and freedom for millions people.

"The Court's deadlocked decision on expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans means that millions of hardworking people in America -- who have worked to build our country up -- might be separated from their loved ones.

"This is the Congress of dysfunction: Congress has refused to pass comprehensive immigration reform, refused to act to prevent gun violence, and refused to allow confirmation of a new Supreme Court justice.

"Our fight is not over. The Department of Justice should seek a rehearing before a full Court. We won't stop fighting for immigrant rights and we won't stop fighting to keep families together."
